Danish brewery Carlsberg has produced a limited edition speciality beer which, at DKK 2008 (£205), is probably the most expensive in the world.
Produced in the cellar of the company's speciality Jacobsen Brewhouse in Copenhagen, Vintage No. 1 has a 10.5 per cent alcohol volume and is matured for six months in new Swedish and French oak barrels. It is characterised by flavours of vanilla, smoke, caramel, prunes and port and is best enjoyed slowly with desserts and cheese.
Developed to challenge wine as the tipple of choice for discerning diners, it comes in 37.5cl corked bottles, featuring an original hand-stilled lithographic print by Danish artist Frans Kannik. Just 600 bottles have been produced and it is currently only on sale in three of Copenhagen's finest restaurants—including the two Michelin-starred Noma—and in the Carlsberg visitor centre, but the company says it may also offer some for sale through its website. Vintage No. 1 is the first in a trilogy of beers, with future brews expected in 2009 and 2010, no doubt with prices to match.
